Dead Reckoning

Drawn into the jazz world through his studies with Saxophone Legend Gary Thomas, the North Carolina native has been on the fringe since the beginning of his career. Yoffee has had a varied background in music - drawing from both the jazz and classical traditions. He began his serious musical studies at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore, MD, majoring in Classical Composition with renowned composers Christopher Theofanidis and Morris Moshe Cotel. He has been awarded for his classical writing and has had performances held at the Royal Academy of Music and the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. While in college he met Gary Thomas and began exploring jazz; playing at clubs in Baltimore and Washington D.C. After graduation Yoffee relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and began working with trumpeter Sean Jones, the drummer Roger Humphries and bassist Dwayne Dolphin.
Dead Reckoning is Yoffee's debut as a leader and finds him exploring several methods of composition as well as improvisation. By definition, Dead Reckoning is the process of estimating one's current position based upon a previously determined position, or fix, and advancing that position based upon known speed, elapsed time, and course. "While formulating the music for Dead Reckoning it was important to take stock of where I came from and where I want to move, artistically, in the long run," says Yoffee.
On this first release, Yoffee has boldy presented his sound concept and compositional style. With nine intriguing compositions, listener's of all backgrounds are given a welcome introduction to this promising new voice on the modern jazz scene. The album features Gary Thomas (flute), Sean Jones (trumpet), Carolyn Perteete (vocals), George Colligan (piano), Jeff Grubbs (bass) and James Johnson III (drums).
